Workshop Studio, Newcastle upon Tyne, 2019
Located in an historic, grade II listed, former flax mill, this project involved creating a new studio for Topo Architects. The intention was to create two distinct spaces – an office for desk-based work and a workshop for making models, material samples and prototypes.
The design utilises a raised mezzanine to create connected, yet defined spaces, with differing ceiling heights that are informed by their use. This allows for brilliant views across the Ouseburn river from the office space, and full height spaces in the workshop where large elements can be fabricated and materials stored below the mezzanine. A large, glazed screen allows for both spaces to benefit from natural daylight, while also regulating the environmental requirements of each space.
Made entirely from solid spruce timber and plywood sheets, the spaces have a material quality that is warm and tactile, while defining new elements that have been inserted alongside the original fabric of the listed mill building.
